When driving stabilizer should the ball be completely clean and dry! – Avoid loud and creaking from your stabilizer 🙂
When you buy a new hitch to, pull your caravan, is towbar (ball) painted black from the factory. Before you tighten your caravan on the towing hook, you should remove the paint on the ball. If you do not remove the black paint on the ball, it will stick to the caravan stabilizer. Sets the black paint stuck on the stabilizer brake linings, you could run the risk of sounds come from the towbar (ball).
When faced with a new car with associated tow hitch, seemed not to have to grind a nice black paint away on the towbar ball – But there is no way around, the black paint to be away on the ball before driving with the caravan.
More car brands such as VW uses Rilsan coating of their tow hooks.
What Rilsan coating:
Rilsan is a thermoplastic polyamide (“nylon”), that has some clear advantages
• Thermoplastic polyamide (Nylon 11)
• Low friction and wear resistant
• Impact resistant and corrosion strong
• Film thickness of 60-1,000 my in one operation - multiple layers can be applied
• High hiding power on edges and corners
• Good insulation properties
Rilsan manufactured by the French company Arkema. The name comes from Rilsan-plant Ricinus (Castor oil – “castor oil” – which is used in the binder) plus the French word “sanitary,” which are intended to illustrate, to Rilsan is easy to clean and also suitable for many foods.
Rilsan applied by heating the topics and dip them in “liquid” powder – that's it, called fluidised. Rilsan can also be applied in the same manner as in electrostatic powder coating.
Depending on the application technique the result will be a half- to helblank surface. Source: JAI-O
How do you remove the paint:
You can use emery, starting eg with grain 80, korn 120 and finish with grain 200-240 to grind the paint of the sphere. You must grind as the round ball is blank, and without paint.
Where should you remove the paint:
You must remove the black paint on the car's tow hitch, but only on the ball itself – See the pictures below:
Painting is not ground off, what do you do:
Have you traveled with the caravan without sanding paint off the ball, there may be a risk that the paint starts to friction pads of the stabilizer – it happened to the blocks in the stabilizer cleaned by sanding with sandpaper.
Before driving the caravan should tow ball on the towing hook must be cleaned of grease and other debris, otherwise reduced stabilization effect of your stabilizer significantly.
Suitable cleaning agents:
• Brake cleaning agent
• Cleaning petrol
Brake linings, contaminated with grease, be replaced IMMEDIATELY (all brake linings) – They do not clean!
NB. Cleaned brake linings have a greatly diminished damping torque.
Removing the cause of squeaking sound:
Have you done everything by the book, but there comes squeaking sound anyway? – Sometimes you can hear a creaking sound from the stabilization clutch, coming from the glassy surface, which in some cases are formed on the pads in the stabilizer. You can with fine sandpaper grinding the glassy surface of the stabilizer pads away, and creaking sound stops.
How do you protect the shiny ball against rust:
You can be having a protective cap mounted sitting down on the ball, protective cap is removed each time you use the car's tow hitch. You can get protection caps in rubber (recommended) and plastic.
Some campers use a little grease on the ball, if they also have a trailer used when not driving with caravan.
NB. Remember the sphere must be cleaned entirely of fats, before connecting the caravan on the towing hook.
